PABRAN - Paraguay, Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil Regional Action Network

In the past couple of years AI’s PABRAN sub-group has mainly focused on Argentina and Brazil. Recent actions dealt with Brazil’s torture and ill-treatment of individuals (including women and children) in police custody and the inhumane prison conditions in general.

Recently our work has consisted primarily of writing Urgent Actions (1-2/month). These actions are about equally divided between Argentina and Brazil. In the latter country cases deal primarily with police brutality and human rights abuses toward indigenous people and human rights workers who advocate for implementation of land distribution rulings. In Argentina we see mostly intimidation and death threats against human rights defenders and those speaking out on behalf of the disenfranchised.
