OUTfront Program - Amnesty International’s Program on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Human Rights

Around the world, the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people are violated daily. People are beaten, imprisoned and killed by their own governments simply for engaging in homosexual acts. Those suspected of being LGBT are also routinely the victims of harassment, discrimination and violence. Many of those who speak up for LGBT rights - regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity - are themselves persecuted with impunity. LGBT Rights are Human Rights.

Democratic Republic of Congo - Take Action on Violence Against Women and Help Protect Civilians

Over 3 million people have lost their lives during the last five years of conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Where is Avdo Palic?

Colonel Avdo Palic was the commander of Bosnian Government forces defending the United Nations-protected enclave of Zepa during the Bosnian war. He "disappeared" on July 28, 1995 after he had gone to negotiate with the Bosnian Serb Army (BSA) for the departure of the town’s last remaining inhabitants. Thanks in part to his efforts, some 5,000 civilians had just been evacuated safely. Several weeks earlier, another UN "safe area," Srebrenica, had been overrun by Serb forces and 7,000 to 8,000 Bosniac (Bosnian Muslim) men and boys had been slaughtered in the worst massacre Europe had seen since the Second World War.

AIUSA Group 23 in Houston, Texas, has been working since March 2001 on the case of Avdo Palic. Please visit their Palic page at www.mindswithoutborders.org to learn how you can help.
