Hope in a Time of Despair

A celebration of our 30 years defending human rights and call to action

On Friday, October 27th, Group 37 members, friends and guests celebrated 30 years of defending human rights in the Twin Cities, recognized and thanked our founder David Weissbrodt and other long-time volunteers, and looked toward the future. A forum devoted to the human rights concerns surrounding the current "War on Terror" featured human rights experts Dr. Steven Miles, Barbara Frey, James Dorsey, and Holly Ziemer.

Honorees

David Weissbrodt is a Regents Professor of Human Rights Law at the University of Minnesota and leading international human rights advocate. Professor Weissbrodt was co-founder of several Twin Cities based human rights organizations, including the Center for Victims of Torture and Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights.

We also recognized Mike Levy, Dr. Gary King, Margaret Rounds, and Ardes Johnson for their diverse and consistent contributions to defending human rights at home and around the world.

Thank You to our Presenters

Dr. Steven Miles has been an early and strong critic of torture. His latest book, Oath Betrayed, examines the role of health care professionals in the prisons of Iraq, Afghanistan, and Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

Barbara Frey, Director of the Human Rights Program at the University of Minnesota, teaches undergraduates, graduates, and law students, and was co-founder and Director of Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights.

James Dorsey, attorney at Fredrickson and Byron law firm in Minneapolis, was co-founder, previous Board President, and pro bono volunteer of Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights.

Holly Ziemer is director of communications at the Center for Victims of Torture.

Special Thanks to...

The Ministers and staff of Unity Church Unitarian, and especially Pat Haff, for hosting our program.
