30th Anniversary Celebration — October 27th, 2006

Attendees were welcomed with the music of Muneer Kahar and Java Now. Ruth Mackenzie opened the event with a song and reading. Group 37 member Gary King presented a history of Group 37's activities and successes over the past 30 years.
Our space, provided by the Unity Unitarian Church, held a standing-room-only crowd. Group 37 founder David Weissbrodt was honored for his broad range of human rights work. Other Group 37 members honored for their years of dedication to human rights.
Chef Geoffrey King provided a delicious menu. Dr. Sigrid Bachmann introduced our keynote speaker, Dr. Steven Miles. Dr. Steven Miles spoke about the role of medical professionals in the current "War on Terror."
Attorney James Dorsey spoke on his experiences representing prisoners held by the U.S. at Guantanamo Bay. Barbara Frey and James Dorsey. Barbara Frey discussed the tensions between international law and U.S. practices in the "War on Terror." Holly Ziemer from the Center for Victims of Torture joined Steven Miles, Barbara Frey, and James Dorsey for a panel discussion and audience questions.
A table of background materials, petitions and case sheets provided ways for attendees to take action for human rights. Group 37 Coordinator and AIUSA Board member Paul Schulte shows one of several AI posters on display.
